Seal of Melchizedek

I found this article on the internet I thought it was interesting. I had heard it before when I was on my mission but couldn't find anywhere that it was written down.

To continue my research I wanted to know as accurately as possible the story about this symbol, the “seal of Melchizedek,” as it was used in the San Diego Temple. I couldn’t find a good account online, so I decided to go to the source. Who better would know than the design architect of the temple? So I gave him a call.
His name is William “Bill” S. Lewis Jr., and he is a member of the Church and a current sealer at the San Diego Temple. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1953 with a degree in architecture, was a co-owner of an architectural firm in San Diego for a number of years, and he has been involved with many architectural projects in the San Diego area. I’m sure he counts his design work on the temple as one of his most cherished experiences. He retired in 1990, after a 41-year career. See the footnotes for a little more background about Br. Lewis 1. He was very cordial on the phone, and gave me the courtesy of about a twenty minute phone call. The story he told me was intriguing, and I thought it would be good to document it.
He said that the architects were given quite a lot of freedom on the design of this particular temple, and it was not dictated by the Church’s building department as other temples have been. This freedom was granted expressly by President Hinckley.
He said they were working hard to find a common symbol, module, or pattern to give continuity to the design, or to give a certain character to the temple. They started with a square, but they thought that was too plain and boxy. Then they started chamfering the square’s corners which brought it to an 8-sided figure. When they extended the lines it became two overlapping squares. They thought that would work well and so they started using it more and more in the design of the temple. He said that the more they used it the better and better it worked. Some people asked about the symbolism of the design, and he told them he didn’t know if it had any particular symbolism. He said that they put a circle in the middle, which he thought could have stood for the sun or the Celestial Kingdom. He said that they used it many thousands of times all throughout the design of the temple – in the doors, fencing, exterior, interior, trimwork, floorplan, etc (see satellite photo above for the use of the symbol in the overall layout). When the design was originally shown to the General Authorities in Salt Lake they had sun stones, moon stones, and star stones on the exterior of the temple too (mirroring the Salt Lake and Nauvoo Temples), but the Brethren notified them that these symbols shouldn’t be used. So they removed these symbols, but they didn’t say anything about the interlocking squares symbol.
Once the temple was finished, Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles escorted the media through the temple, as they are some of the first that get to go through. Someone from the media asked him what the symbol was, and what it represented, and Elder Haight was taken a little off-guard by that question. He said that it was probably just an architectural detail.
Br. Lewis said that a good friend of his, Stan Smith, who has been a regional representative, and was the project representative on the temple, was taking photos all the time during the construction of the temple. But this particular symbol bugged him for some reason. He took the photos he had down to the Church Historian’s Office in Salt Lake City and asked if they knew anything about it. They didn’t. But they suggested that he take them down to Hugh Nibley at BYU who might know something about it. So Br. Smith made an appointment with Br. Nibley, and sat down with him in his office and asked him if this symbol had a name. Nibley said something like, “Oh sure, it is the seal of King Melchizedek.” He also indicated that it was a symbol of Melchizedek’s power, kingdom, and as a type of name of Melchizedek, like a seal in wax.
Stan Smith called Br. Lewis to tell him the good news, and was quite excited about it. Br. Lewis wanted to verify it himself, so he made an appointment with Nibley too. Nibley verified it with Lewis as well, after which they had an extensive conversation about all things temples, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, etc., with Nibley in typical fashion referring to all three in the same sentence.
Br. Lewis said that President Hinckley would probably be interested to know this detail about the symbol, since he had met with the architects 4 times throughout the design of this temple, which was extremely unusual. So Lewis wrote a letter to President Hinckley, who Lewis said also verified it with Nibley.
Since then Br. Lewis has seen the same symbol used on the Newport Beach Temple, and also in several places in the Salt Lake Temple (like the door patrons enter with a beehive in the center), and he supposes that we will see it more and more as time goes on. But he was pleasantly surprised to have found out such an interesting detail about the symbol that he used throughout the San Diego Temple. He has been asked to speak hundreds of times about the design of the San Diego Temple in firesides and other occasions. He said a couple years ago he was asked to speak at an event of the Fine Arts Department at BYU about it, but wasn’t sure of the details of the occasion.
It is doubtful that there is a transcription anywhere of this story, so I took as many details down as I could on our phone conversation. Thanks to Br. Lewis for telling us this great story.

Momma turns her back and...Uh-Oh!

Yesterday morning Zander was in the front room playing, so I decided I would go make me some toast. I can see him from the kitchen but when I turned around from getting my toast out of the toaster he wasn't in the front room anymore. Now that he is mobile I know if he is not playing with his toys he is probably in the bathroom causing mischief! Usually he will just open up the cupboard and empty it all out, but this time he decided he would try something new! Toilet paper everywhere! Uh-Oh here comes trouble!

Playing at the Park

We went to the park yesterday so Zander and I could get out of the house. He is still too small to play on the playground, but he loves to swing! After the swings he decided to try eating some leaves on the ground...mmm, tasty!

Funny Sleeper

I have wanted to get a picture of this for quite some time now. I will lay him down for his nap and he will get right back up and play until he just tuckers himself out I guess. He can't even lay back down before he falls asleep, so he ends up napping on his bum folded in half! What a funny little boy!

Halloween 2009

This year I decided I wanted to try and make our halloween costumes. Zander was Peter Pan and I thought for my first attempt his costume turned out really cute. I ran out of time on Jer's so we bought his Hook costume. I made my Tinkerbell outfit and was not pleased the first night that I wore it to our ward party. So, I made a few minor adjustments for our friends Halloween party and was much happier with how it turned out! We had so much fun with our friends on Halloween, I will post some of our friends pictures soon.

Pumpkin Patch

We went to the Flower Mound pumpkin patch for the first time this year. I was so excited because Zander had fun with all of the pumpkins and we got some really cute pictures! Thanks mom for his cute new shirt!

Our Big Boy!

Zander is getting so BIG! I can't believe it. He started to crawl exactly at 9 months, on Sept. 30th. And now as you can see in the picture it is a lot more difficult to change his diaper! He usually is up and gone by the time you have his old one off! We have to watch him a lot more carefully now. He loves getting into everything he is not supposed to be in. He stands up at our coffee table and tries to pull everything off of it. The other day he got my water bottle, (which I thought was out of his reach) and he thought it was a good idea to water our carpet and our dog! He is such a sweet boy and so funny. I am so thankful to be his mommy and to have a job where I am able to home with him almost all the time.

From 1 kid to 5 over night!

I am currently at my sister's house in Cleburne. She lives about an hour away from me which I love! It has been nice to have some family close by. Courtney had a business trip in Galvaston so Kellee decided to go too. So, I arrived Monday night to take care of their 4 little munchkins! They all have been quite good which is nice...I don't like being a mean aunt! I was totally bummed out when I realized I forgot my camera because while I am here with a computer I wanted to update my blog with new pictures. Sorry I will have to do that another time. Today is my last day taking care of 5 kids, so tomorrow when I wake up it will be back to 1 for me!

Nine months old...already?!

My little sweet pea is already 9 months and I can't believe it! He is such a good boy, we are so blessed. I love waking up to him every morning because he is so happy and lights up my day! He is so funny, and we just get a kick out of watching him...quite entertaining to say the least! Zander is getting closer and closer to crawling. Before I left for work he was actually crawling but would end up on his belly doing the army crawl. Actually, his army crawl isn't really an army crawl at all. He only goes to his right right side and looks like he is doing the swimming side stroke. Sometimes he ends up going in a circle because he only goes to the one side. Today I had to raise his crib rail because he finally can reache it, and pulled himself up to stand. I went to get the camera and on my way back to his room heard a big bang followed by screaming. He had fallen backwards and hit his head on the other side of the crib. He was all crumpled up and super sad! We are so happy that Zander is our little baby, we feel so blessed! He has added so much to our lives, we cannot imagine our lives without him. We love our little man more than we ever knew possible!

Boot Camp

So, my friend Mary told me about a bootcamp and asked me if I wanted to do it too. I started Monday the 28th and now my whole body hurts...I can barely lift my arms or move my neck! Ouch! Hopefully I will whip myself into shape and see the results I am hoping for. It goes until Oct. 31st and it's 3 days a week. I am hoping that after this 1st week is over I wont hurt quite as bad!

Missing Lyndsey and Zander

My wife was able to get a free round trip to Utah and back. The only catch is that she had to do it in a car the whole time with Zander. She left last week and will not come back till my finals are over on the 20th. I miss them. While I was typing an assignment up for school I decided to look at some pics on my computer of them. I realized that Lyndsey didn't put any pics of herself on the blog from when we went to the botanical garden. So I went trough them and here you go. My wife is so hot!!!
Love you honey. Have fun XXXOOO.
P.S. Paul this is before you taught me how to use aperture so don't be disappointed in the quality :)

1st time in about 5 years

My wife is the greatest. She spoiled me for my birthday and Fathers day. One of the gifts that I got is a set of golf clubs and my good friends the Redd’s got me a driver. Josh Redd is seen in the golf cart with me. By how well I golfed you could tell it had been 5 years. I had fun it was good to get out with some friends from my class. The pic of the golf ball is me missing a putt. Thanks honey I love you so much. XXXOOO

10 years!

July 2nd marked 10 years since my dad passed away! It's crazy I can't believe it has been 10 years! Not a day goes by that I don't think of my great dad. Especially lately with my sweet little Zander here. I always think how much my dad would have loved spending time with the grandkids! I am sure they would've been his pride and joy just like Kellee and me were when we were little. I love you dad, and you are missed greatly!

Happy Father's Day!

I know I am a couple days late here but I just wanted to write a few things. I am so thankful for my wonderful husband who is so loving and caring! He is such a good daddy to Zander and I know he loves our little guy so much. Although he is not home much he makes it count when he is there. Zander lights up when his daddy is home. Jeremy thank you for all your hard work in school. It will pay off and I know you love us so much, and we love you so much too!

Also, I want to give thanks to my dad, Jer's dad, and my Uncle Ron. All of these men have been great father figures to me. I am so grateful for the time I had with my dad before he passed away. He loved us girls, there was no doubt about that! I am thankful for all I learned from him. And Sherm thanks for having a hand in Jer's life, he is an amazing man! Uncle Ron you have been a father figure to me since my dad died and you have done so much for me! I am in debt to you that is for sure. I am indeed grateful for the love and generosity you have given me and Jer!

Thanks! I love you all very much!

I can't believe my little sweetie is already 5 months old. I wanted to write some of the things he does so I can always remember.

1. He is almost always smiling or giggling
2. While I feed him he always scratches at my arm. Or when he is in his crib falling asleep you can hear him scratching his mattress.
3. He rolls from his tummy to his back and vice versa.
4. I think he is starting to get one tooth.
5. He sleeps through the night!
6. He loves to play in his exersaucer.
7. He weighs about 16lbs and is 26in long, what a big boy!
8. He is such a super boy pretty much all of the time!

Fishy Faces!

videoIt was so cute last night Zander was copying me as I was doing fishy faces. He actually was doing a real good job, so you'll have to watch the video to see how cute this really was!

Cute Feet

Just a pointer for any new moms who want to get pictures of your babys feet, do it while they are brand new! We weren't on top of this and waited until just recently and it was much harder trying to control Zander while he was kicking around.

Zander's Blessing Day

While we were in Utah for Jer's break we were able to bless Zander! It was such a special day for us to share with our family and friends. We are so grateful to have such wonderful family who supports us in all we do. Also, we feel so blessed to be members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Being members of the church we get blessed in so many ways and we are so thankful. Thank you to all of you who came to see Zander get blessed and all of your help with the food. It was such a great day one to always remember!

Easter Egg Fun!

Jer and I decided it would be fun to color easter eggs. We both had not done this in quite some time. We invited our friend Colton who lives by us to come over and enjoy the coloring maddnes! We had more fun then we even thought we would. One of my tye dye eggs won for the coolest egg.
